At Clifton High School, we encourage our Sixth Form students to retain their adventurous spirit and keep pushing the boundaries of exploration and discovery. They continue their enjoyment of the Senior Adventure Programme and challenge themselves further in developing environmental awareness, survival skills, self-confidence and resilience. Many former students have undertaken the Year 12 Mountain Expedition, which incorporates mountain walking. |
| DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME |
|
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) is an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development activities for young people aged 14-25. Clifton High School pupils are allowed to follow a Bronze DofE programme from Year 9, a Silver DofE programme from Year 10, and a Gold DofE programme from their sixteenth birthday. We encourage all our pupils to participate in DofE as achieving an Award is considered by many universities and employers as a demonstration of strength of character and commitment to themselves and others. It also provides pupils with important life skills to take them through life. Full details of the requirements for each Award can be found on the Duke of Edinburgh's Award website. Pupils must participate in four (Bronze) or five (Gold) sections of Volunteering, Physical and Skills, committing to one hour a week over a 3 to 18-month period, depending on the award level. PhysicalPupils are able choose between pursuing a new sport or focusing on a sport they already enjoy. Physical activities are varied and can include team sports, individual sports, dance, fitness or martial arts. Former entrants have completed this section in aerobics, badminton, circuit training, dance, hockey, judo, netball, riding, sailing, swimming and yoga. SkillsPupils develop practical and social skills and personal interests. Former entrants have developed skills in art, calligraphy, cookery, dress-making, Greek, Italian, keeping pets, piano, pottery, singing and violin. ExpeditionsPlanning sessions for the expeditions take place during lunchtime and after School. Students learn the basic skills of navigation and also familiarise themselves with the equipment they will be using. The venues chosen for the expeditions are carefully matched to the capabilities of the participants, but may include areas such as the Mendips, Cotswolds, Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons. Residential (Gold only)Gold Award participants are required to undertake an additional fifth section: Residential, which involves staying and working away from home to do a shared activity for at least five days. A wide variety of projects are available, but those involving environmental conservation work or adventurous activities often prove to be the most popular. Clifton High School staff members will guide those residential projects that meet the Gold Award’s criteria. |
